Champions League: All-English final or Spain ?

Liverpool, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Villarreal are all competing to succeed Chelsea as European champions. It is the Premier League against La Liga as the Champions League begins a blockbuster semi-final stage this week. In England's corner are domestic title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, who face Spain's Villarreal and Real Madrid respectively. The Premier League is represented by its top two, a pair who have largely swept aside all they have faced this campaign as they go toe-to-toe for every trophy on the table. City and Liverpool are favourites to win their respective semi-finals and continue England's recent dominance of the Champions League. After being absent from the final for five seasons between 2013 and 2017, the Premier League has provided five of the past eight finalists, with two of the past three showdowns being all-English affairs. For Liverpool, this is familiar territory. They are bidding for a third final in five seasons, having lost to Re...

Top 10 Premier League free kick takers and goals

A couple of Manchester United legends figure prominently on a list of dead-ball specialists that includes plenty of modern day There are few greater sights in football than seeing a spectacular free kick curled over a defensive wall and into the top corner, with the  Premier League  fortunate enough to have been graced by many iconic performers who have perfected that art. Manchester United  legend David Beckham was always a threat over a dead-ball, for the Red Devils and England, while  Cristiano Ronaldo  picked up that baton when inheriting a famous No.7 shirt at Old Trafford. All-time greats such as Thierry Henry and Gianfranco Zola made a habit of finding the target from set-pieces during their memorable stints in London at  Arsenal  and  Chelsea  respectively, while  Southampton  star  James Ward-Prowse  has become the pick of the bunch in the modern era. 1. Liverpool continues 14 games Premier League unbeaten

Liverpool's recent run of positive results is "insane", boss Jurgen Klopp said after they made it 14 Premier League games unbeaten with victory over Everton in Sunday's Merseyside derby. The Reds trail leaders Manchester City by a point, having dropped just four points in the league since 28 December. They are in contention for a quadruple, with a Champions League semi-final and FA Cup final to come. It is now 13 wins in 15 league games for the Reds since their loss at Leicester just after Christmas, with recent results also including them beating Pep Guardiola's City in an FA Cup semi-final and Benfica over two legs in the Champions League last eight. They also won the Carabao Cup in February. Klopp's side were frustrated by a stubborn Everton in the first half of Sunday's game at Anfield, but a header from Andrew Robertson broke the tension before Luis Diaz set up fellow substitute Divock Origi to score his sixth Merseyside derby goal to seal the point...

Chelsea return to winning ways at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea needed patience and persistence at Stamford Bridge as we returned to winning ways in the Premier League courtesy of Christian Pulisic’s last-minute strike. It had been a frustrating afternoon for long periods as West Ham’s resolute defending and brave blocking prevented a breakthrough. Neither side had a shot on target in the opening hour, with opportunities thereafter spurned from open play and the penalty spot when  Jorginho ’s effort was saved by Lukasz Fabianski. Yet  Thomas Tuchel ’s men kept on pushing and their belief paid off late on as we found a way through when Pulisic arrowed a neat finish into the bottom corner to convert  Marcos Alonso ’s cutback cross and send Stamford Bridge wild with relieved joy. It was our first home victory since a similarly dramatic late winner from  Kai Havertz  against Newcastle United in early March and the three points cemented our position in the Premier League’s top three, five points clear of Arsenal.

Mauricio Pochettino's side secured the trophy with four matches to spare as they wrestled the title back from Lille following their surprise triumph in the 2020-21 campaign. The trophy was ultimately clinched with ease, though their latest Ligue 1 victory could not avoid boos and jeers from the Parc des Princes crowd after a less than convincing performance. PSG have won the title back from Lille by picking up 24 victories in 34 games, while also recording just six draws and four defeats. With Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar leading the line, the Parisians unsurprisingly have the best attack in the division with 76 goals scored as they...
